Nationals of Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan may apply to live and work in the UK by making an application for Entry Clearance for Leave to Enter and Remain in the UK under the Tier 5 (Youth Mobility Scheme) route of the British Points Based System.


Equally the route is open for British Overseas Citizens, British Overseas Territories Citizens or British Nationals Overseas.


To be eligible to apply for Leave to Enter and Remain in the UK under the Tier 5 (Youth Mobility Scheme) category of the Points Based System, an applicant must score a minimum of mandatory 50 Points; 30 Points awarded to demonstrate they are a qualified national, 10 Points to demonstrate that they are above the age 18 years and under the age of 31, and they have sufficient maintenance funds.


A) Nationality

Only the following nationals are entitled to make an application under this route:


Australia, Hong Kong special administrative region, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, South Korea, Taiwan, British Overseas Citizens, British Overseas Territories Citizen and British National Overseas.


It is crucial for applicants to note that applications made from Australia, Hong Kong, Canada, Taiwan Japan, Monaco, South Korea and New Zealand are subject to an annual allocation. However British Overseas Citizens, British Overseas Territories Citizens and British Nationals Overseas are not subject to the allocation process.


B) Maintenance

To satisfy the maintenance requirement, applicants should show by way of specified evidence that they have access to disposable funds of at least £1,890.00 available to them and held in a regulated personal bank account in their own name.


C) Age

Applicant must be over the age of 18 at the time of their proposed entry to the UK, and be under the age 31 at the time they make their applications.


D) Additional Evidence:

While it is not mandatory, we advise applicants to include their CV with a short covering letter explaining their motivation and reasons for wishing to come and reside in the UK under the Tier 5 (Youth Mobility Scheme) route.


The current Home Office Visa Section fees for such application is currently set at £244, however the fees are charged in USD so the amount charged will vary.


Applicants allowed under this route to carry out any type of work in the UK except working as a professional sportsperson, sports coach, doctor/dentist in training.


Applicants must register their detailed with the Policy upon arrival if required to do so and they do not have any access to public funds but they are entitled to obtain medical care under the National Health Services.


Successful applicants would be granted leave to enter and remain in the UK for a period of 24 months.  During this period, they may leave and re-enter the UK without any restrictions.


Applicants are allowed to study, take up unrestricted employment and engage in self-employment activities if they wish to do so. There is no extension under this route and there is no into another visa category while holding the YMS visa. You will be expected to leave the UK at the end of your leave.
